Because site visits take time and preparation for the nonprofit organization, you might develop a policy for when to do them. Here are steps for determining when you might conduct a site visit:
Determine your goals for making site visits
Will you use site visits to prioritize proposals that go to decision makers, or to help decision makers decide among proposals? Or, will you use them to help shape grant agreements for “Yes” proposals?
Establish criteria for site visits
Once you decide the overall purpose, establish criteria for site visits such as, “Visit organizations requesting dollar amounts over xxx,” or “Visit groups that are new to us.” This will save you time by limiting the organizations you need to visit.
