Juggling it all requires remarkable leadership and skill.

The Master Juggler Executive Institute at CONNECT is carefully crafted for those in the most senior staff role at their foundations. It combines leadership development with CONNECT’s practical workshops, providing executive directors the opportunity to hone their individual leadership skills while exploring organizational best practices.

This small-group experience supports deep connections, real accountability, and personalized learning for each participant.

Program Highlights

The Master Juggler Executive Institute at CONNECT will offer participants the adaptive leadership framework for addressing complex organizational challenges. The adaptive leadership model introduces a set of tools and practices to help bring about progress within the foundation while sustaining oneself in the work of leadership for as long as possible.

The framework is premised on the idea that we live in times of rapid change and that organizations must adapt if they wish to thrive, and even survive. Yet to make such adaptations, we must be prepared to discard ways of working that hold back progress and adopt new practices that can lead to greater effectiveness and impact. In this context, the work of leadership involves accompanying people through the realities of necessary change while opening them up to the promise of the future.

Participants will come to the institute with a complex challenge that they will workshop during the program. The program will overlap with the 2019 CONNECT conference and Master Juggler participants will be directed but not required to attend conference workshops on various foundation management topics.

After the conclusion of the institute in October, participants will have the option to continue working on their challenges through virtual consultations with the facilitator and/or a small community of practice.

Facilitator Marc Ross Manashil is principal of 11plus, a philanthropic consultancy specializing in collaboration and leadership development. He is also a lecturer at New York University’s Silver School of Social Work and the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. Marc was a longtime member of Exponent Philanthropy and served for many years on its Programs & Services Committee.

Program Components

In-Person Training Intensive during the CONNECT Conference
October 1–4, 2019, St. Louis
The Master Juggler Executive Institute will start the day before the CONNECT conference commences and continue throughout the conference.

  • The program begins the morning of Tuesday, October 1, runs the full day and includes dinner.
  • Participants will gather again on Wednesday, October 2, in the morning, concluding in time for the CONNECT Opening Plenary.
  • The close of the program will be at the end of the day on Thursday, October 3, with a special reception and debrief.

Program participants will be able to attend CONNECT sessions, general sessions, and meals.

Continuing Support
October 2019 – March 2020
The Master Juggler Executive Institute will focus on guiding participants to address important professional challenges. Participants will have the option to continue working on their challenges through virtual consultations with the facilitator and/or a small community of practice a few times during the six months following the institute.

Eligibility

Eligible participants serve as the executive director, CEO, or most senior staff member at the foundation. Please read additional Participant Guidelines.

Application Procedure

Applications will be reviewed by the facilitator to ensure that participants meet the guidelines and serve as either the executive director, CEO, or most senior staff member at the foundation.

In order to ensure the program is the best fit for each participant, you will be asked to respond to these four questions during the registration process:

  1. For how many years have you served in your current role as executive director or CEO?
  2. For how many years have you been working in the philanthropic sector, including the time you’ve spent in your current role?
  3. The Master Juggler Executive Institute at CONNECT will focus on learning about the adaptive leadership model and making progress on tough challenges in your work. Participants will be asked to bring a challenge with them to the program. Tell us about a challenge that you would like to work on during the institute.
  4. In 2-3 sentences, tell us what you hope to get out of the experience.

Registration Guidelines

Participants will register for the Master Juggler Executive Institute at CONNECT as a part of their CONNECT registration (opening later this Spring).
Substitutions will not be accepted for this cohort program. Written cancellation/refund requests will be approved only under extreme circumstances and according to the same deadlines as listed above. In the case of cancellation, your spot will not carry over to future programs and you will need to reapply.
