The Skees Family Foundation based near San Francisco has looming ambitions to help end poverty and extend human rights around the world. With just one volunteer staff person and $2 million in assets, it amplifies its efforts with multiyear grants and volunteer time to select U.S.-based partners that manage programs in 26 developing countries.

When Seattle, WA–based Unitus invited foundation founder and director Suzanne Skees and her son Jonah (then 13) to Kenya, they jumped at the chance.
